SWIMMING LESSONS - LEARN TO SWIMAMERICAN RED CROSS LEARN TO SWIM The Woodland Park “Learn to Swim Program” follows the criteria set by the American Red Cross. Descriptions of the classes are listed below with basic passing skills for each level. Please remember it is common for a child to repeat a level.
INFANT TODDLER (PARENT AND CHILD) This is a water orientation program designed to teach parents, with an instructor’s assistance, how to safely and effectively introduce their child to water. One child per parent in class.
GUPPIES (3 – 5 YEARS OLD) For the child that is ready for their own class without mom and dad. This class is designed to develop comfort in the water and to begin learning about floating, breath control and safety.
LEVEL 1: WATER EXPLORATION (5 YEARS & OLDER) This class is for the first-timer and possibly timid swimmer. Learning objectives include: water adjustment, basic breath control, floating and kicking with assistance and becoming familiar with the arm movements of the crawl stroke.
LEVEL 2: PRIMARY SKILLS (5 YEARS & OLDER) To enter this level, participants must have met the learning objectives of Level 1. Skills learned in this level include: unsupported front and back floats, bobbing, front crawl with kick for 5 yards, back crawl with kick for 5 yards and personal safety rescue skills.
LEVEL 3: STROKE READINESS (5 YEARS & OLDER) Participants in this level should possess the skills taught in Level 2. Skills needed to complete this level are: retrieve object from the bottom of chest deep water, dive from the side in beginning diving position, crawl stroke with breathing to side for 10 yards, back crawl for 10 yards, elementary backstroke kick and treading water.
LEVEL 4: STROKE DEVELOPMENT (5 YEARS & OLDER) Swimmers must be able to demonstrate skills taught in Level 3. Skill taught in this level include: deep water bobbing, standing front dive, elementary backstroke and crawl for 25 yards, sidestroke scissors kick, breaststroke kick, turns at the wall and treading water for 2 minutes.
LEVEL 5: STROKE REFINEMENT (5 YEARS & OLDER) Swimmers must be able to demonstrate skills taught in Level 4. Completion requirements for this level are: stride jump entry, long shallow dive, swim 10 yards breaststroke and sidestroke, swim underwater 3 body lengths, elementary backstroke 25 yards, dolphin kick 10 yards, swim 50 yards of front and back crawl, turns and surface dives.
