Stay Prepared, Stay Safe!
There are a few precautionary measures you can take to keep you and your family safe during a snow event.
- Sign up for Nixle alerts for your County - text your zip code to 888777
- Listen to local area radio, the National Weather Service, or local news
- Assemble an emergency preparedness kit for your vehicle and your home
- Keep in your vehicle: an ice scraper, extra coats/gloves/warm clothes, water, matches, and sand bags or tractions mats to generate traction in case you get stuck
The best way to stay safe during a snow event? Stay home! If the roads are bad, don't risk it!
Plowing in Woodland Park
The City begins its snow-plowing process once 4 inches of snow has accumulated, or as conditions may require. Our wonderful plow drivers do their best to ensure our roads are clear of snow and sand slick spots as quickly as they can.
Where do we plow?
The City is responsible for keeping 62 miles of roadway accessible! We plow all public roads within City limits. Remember, we do not plow County or State roads! US-24 CO-67 are plowed and maintained by the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT).
Plow Priorities:
- Bus Routes and Sidewalks to Area Schools
- Primary Roads and Public Parking Areas
- Secondary Roads
- Alley-ways and cul-de-sacs
- Continue sanding as needed
Please remember these important guidelines during a snow event:
- Stay off the street. Please do not park on the side of the road, or in the City’s right-of- way. Keep garbage cans off the streets, so snow plows do not hit them during their plow route.
- Keep it behind the curb. Snow that has been cleared from private property must be deposited in a ditch line, behind the sidewalk, or behind the curb and gutter. (WPMC 12.02.010) Remember when plowing and clearing snow from your driveway or parking lot, do not plow snow from private property onto public streets or sidewalks. (WPMC 12.02.010)
- Keep kiddos off snow piles. Do not let your children play in roadside snowbanks or parking lot snow piles. As plow drivers clear snow and remove snow from storage area, children could be in danger of snow collapse or being hit by a plow truck.
- Stay visible. Please try to wear bright colors when walking on the road in the dark. During snow events, plow drivers are often out in the early morning before the sun rises. The darkness, in combination with the billowing snow kicked up by the plow, makes it difficult to see pedestrians dressed in dark colors on the roadway.
